Elephant Clown Act, Part Deux

by: Foiled Goil

The GOP clown party is still at it:

Republicans Playing More Games On House Floor

Crooks and Liars:
Oh those silly Republicans, trying to show how seriously they take their job...

Bush Rebuffs GOP's 'Boston Tea Party,' Won't Request Special Session For Oil Drilling Stunt

Think Progress:
These conservatives are desperately trying to convince the American public that this crude political stunt is actually important. To do so, they are casting the protest as historic, akin to what happened at the founding of the nation...

* * * * *

But even the White House refuses to endorse this political theater.

* * * * *

The conservative stunt is a waste of time. As even the White House has admitted, there is no “short-term” solution to high gas prices. Both the Energy Information Administration — and McCain’s own economic adviser — have stated that expanding offshore drilling “would not have a significant impact” on oil prices.

GOP won't let go of its new tire-gauge toy

Carpetbagger Report:
Atrios asked this morning, “Does anyone understand why Obama suggesting that people keep their tires properly inflated is some sort of hilarious gaffe?”

I’ve been trying to figure out the same thing for days.

* * * * *

There’s something deeply wrong with these people.

Let’s review. The other day, Barack Obama mentioned to voters in Missouri that there are things individuals can do to help conserve energy, including bringing their cars in for regular tune ups, and keeping their tires properly inflated. It seemed like a rather unremarkable thing to say.

But at this point, Republicans can’t seem to stop commenting on just how remarkable they think this is.

* * * * *

Obama was observing that coastal drilling would save us so little oil and so little money even twenty years from now, that you can actually save more money immediately by doing “simple things” such as keeping your tires properly inflated.

Where did he get that crazy idea? From George Bush’s Energy Department and Environmental Protection Agency…. Their joint site fueleconomy.gov is loaded with fuel-saving, money-saving tips. Keep your tires properly inflated, for example, and you can save up to 12 cents a gallon.

Compare that immediate savings from that single tip, with what coastal and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge drilling combined would get you two decades from now: 6 cents a gallon.

And that’s being generous, because Bush’s Energy Department says we can’t expect any impact on prices from coastal drilling until the year 2030.

In their knee-jerk mockery, conservatives are flying closer to the truth then they intend to.

Obama Camp Hits Back At "Tire Gauge" Rhetoric

CBS:
"And while the McCain team may is busy amusing themselves, the fact is that the idea they’re attacking is supported by, among others, top McCain surrogate Joe Lieberman, conference call host Mike Rogers, Governors Charlie Crist and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Department of Energy, and NASCAR — all of whom have urged Americans to help save energy by minding tire pressure," the Obama team continued in the email. "But hey, who ever let the facts — or supporters’ positions — get in the way of a political attack? Aboard the Low Road Express, that’s no problem at all."

So, don't forget the mockery, but do remember to check your tire pressure -- because tires just don't get enough respect:
Savvy consumers are seeking to increase fuel economy and the life of their tires by paying more attention to those rubber objects that are attached to their vehicle [...]

Tires that are underinflated by 6 to 7 pounds per square inch increase tire rolling resistance 10 percent or more, increase tread wear rates and tire fatigue. When a tire is underinflated, the tire's road contact zone and cyclic stress level changes resulting in undesirable loss in tire and vehicle performance [...]

With escalating fuel prices, the time is now for drivers to focus on simple things like proper tire pressure to maximize tire performance and increase fuel economy.

Talk about inflated:

Multiple Oil Company Executives Gave Huge Contributions To Electing McCain Just Days After Offshore Drilling Reversal

TPM election central:
Ten senior Hess Corporation executives and/or members of the Hess family each gave $28,500 to the joint RNC-McCain fundraising committee, just days after McCain reversed himself to favor offshore drilling, according to Federal Election Commission reports.

Conversely, when driving in the winter on icy/snow-covered roads, having your tires slightly under-inflated decreases your chances of slipping or sliding on the roadway. Notice I wrote "slightly."

Au contraire. Just some of what I found in a quick search: +tires +"winter driving" +inflation:

Be Tire Smart:

There is a common misconception among car owners that tire inflation is a hot weather problem, but that's not the case," said Glenn Maidment, president of The Rubber Association of Canada. "By maintaining proper tire inflation consumers can save money at the pumps, reduce emissions and most importantly, increase the safety of their vehicles."

Proper tire pressure is critical for safe driving and fuel efficiency, but many vehicles operate with improperly inflated tires. A recent study commissioned by The Rubber Association of Canada and the Government of Canada found that 70% of vehicles on the road in Canada have at least one tire that is improperly inflated.

Improperly inflated tires cause handling problems, including poor or delayed braking, steering and acceleration. Over-inflated tires result in reduced grip on the road which leads to a harsh ride and increased wear on tires and suspension components.

With proper tire maintenance, vehicles operate more efficiently, saving the average driver two weeks worth of gas a year while reducing emissions that contribute to climate change and other environmental problems.

Michelin Man:

WARNING: Serious or fatal injury may result from tire failure due to underinflation or overloading.

Consumer Reports:

In addition, it's always important to monitor tire pressure, as incorrect inflation can compromise a vehicle's handling and road-holding ability.

MSNBC:

Check tire-tread depth and tire pressure: Winter tires will give you the best braking, handling and safety in the cold temperatures. If you find yourself sliding around more than usual, check your pressures. For every 10 degrees of air pressure you will lose 1-2 pounds of pressure, which will give you poor handling and braking and wear out your tires quicker.

Road Trip America:

Tires and Traction: You should have at least 1/8-inch tire tread depth and proper inflation. Cold temperatures have a lowering effect on tire pressures—check frequently to maintain adequate inflation.

And,

CBC News, Canada:

Proper tire inflation is the single most important part of tire care so it's important to monitor the air pressure in your tires. The tires on your car were engineered to provide you with specific handling characteristics that can only be realized if you have the correct amount of pressure in them. A tire that is improperly inflated is prone to irregular wear, poor handling, traction loss and reduced tread life.

[...]

Tire pressure should always be checked when the tires are cold. You must also take into account the temperature outdoors when you operate your vehicle, as this has a direct affect on tire pressure. A change in temperature means a change in tire pressure.

Road and Travel:

In addition to installing winter tires, it is essential to make sure that they are properly inflated, rotated, aligned and replaced, as necessary. As outside temperatures drop, the air inside a tire contracts and the pressure is reduced. Therefore, it is imperative to check your tire pressure weekly during the colder months. Under-inflation will lessen the gripping action because the tread will not meet the road surface as it is designed to do; this also occurs with over-inflation.

Buzzle:

According to Goodyear, one of the world’s best known and trusted tire manufacturers, winter is the time when the inflation of your car’s tires drops. This is because the air inside the tire goes down as the temperature around also drops. The company also does say that if the temperature drops to around ten degrees, the tire pressure also goes down by about one to two pounds. If you are not quite so observant about this on your tires, you may be experiencing some tire trouble later on as you do your winter driving.

Bob Toth is the marketing manager of Goodyear for its auto tires and he points out, "Odds are that many motorists haven’t checked their tire pressure since the weather began turning colder. If the last time the tire pressure was checked was during the heat of summer, with temperatures around 80 degrees, many people could be riding on severely underinflated tires without realizing it." He also does continue, "Even though consumers can simply and quickly check the air pressure of their tires, it becomes a neglected practice by many. That’s too bad, because the four patches of rubber that come in contact with the road surface are vitally important to the performance of the vehicle. They are key for acceleration, lateral traction and braking grip."

To be sure, check your car’s tires and make sure that you maintain the required air pressure as specified in your car owner’s manual. After all, if you have underinflated tires and you continue on using your vehicle, you would be surprised to find severe tread wear on the outside edges of your tires.

America’s Auto-Makers: Congress Should Inflate Their Tires, Not Their Rhetoric:

As part of this campaign we advocated maintaining proper tire pressure as one simple step consumers could take to increase fuel economy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. It’s more important than you may think. For instance, did you know…

• The Department of Energy estimates that 1.2 billion gallons of fuel were wasted in 2005 as a result of driving on under-inflated tires.

• Fuel efficiency is reduced by 1% for every 3 PSI that tires are under-inflated.

• Proper tire inflation can save the equivalent of about 1 tank of gas per year.

• Proper tire inflation also reduces CO2 emissions.

• Experts estimate that 25% of automobiles are running on tires with lower than recommended pressure, because people don’t know how to check their tires or don’t realize that tires naturally lose air over time.

Maintaining proper tire pressure may not solve our dependence on foreign oil, but it will help.

July 31, 2008:

Today, Exxon Mobil announced that they had made $11.7 billion in the last three months, the most profitable quarter ever for an American company.

- - -

In the past 12 months, the five largest oil companies have earned $148 billion world wide, including an estimated $47 billion in the United States. To put these numbers in perspective: if these U.S. profits were distributed evenly among American drivers, it would equal about $236 per driver.

Well, yes, they need that extra profit so they can contribute to the McSame Greedy Oil Party...

so they can get even more tax welfare...

and more profits.
