Breaking News: SCOTUS Chief Justice Hospitalized after Seizure

by: Dark Wraith

CNN is reporting that United States Supreme Court Justice John Roberts, appointed to the High Court in 2005 by President George W. Bush, has suffered a seizure of unknown cause at his summer home in Maine and has been taken to a hospital in nearby Rockport, where doctors are at this time downplaying the severity of the incident.

Roberts suffered a similar seizure in 1993. Doctors are claiming that there is no cause for concern and are characterizing the episode as a "benign idiopathic seizure." His previous seizure was blamed on stress.

Although Roberts' seizure 14 years ago was duly reported to Senate Judiciary Committee members when they were considering his nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, no concern was expressed at the time because of how long ago it had happened.

I don't have any special love for Alpha SCOTUS (far from it) but I don't think a seizure is reason generally speaking to cast doubts on one's fitness for employment. Not that I am suggesting you are taking that view.

Many people can and do live with this. What troubles me honestly is the way we have gotten to a point where many on the left celebrate these events- because we figure there is no room for empathy at the table when talking about the Falwellian ilk. The wingnuts sure dont spare the snickers, right? These are the people who can even laugh at Michael J Fox, for fuck's sake, right?
But schadenfreude aside, I wonder about this element of rationalized ugliness. I can't put my finger on it, maybe some of you out there can. But I can't quite cross the line.
In my humble opinion, the Roberts story presents us with a good opportunity to take a look at this and examine the way we are permitting some people to foster our " inner asshole". I know many would say: but look, naive Pollyanna, look what THEY do! To that I respond that I judge them accordingly but have no desire to move closer to their way, thank you.

Let's ditch the bastard. Not to sound uncaring, but he needs to attend to his personal life and stop fucking it up for the rest of us.
by: Konagod (contact) - 30 Jul '07 - 21:33
Or, to put it another way, turnabout is fair play.

Everything Bush touches turns to shit. I'm happy to say I've never met the man.
by: Konagod (contact) - 30 Jul '07 - 21:37
i think that it is totally apropos that the chief justice who has allowed the fifth amendment to be gutted should now be afflicted with siezures, warrentless and unreasonable.

justice is inevitable.
by: Minstrel Boy (contact) - 30 Jul '07 - 21:53
Maybe it's stress. Maybe falling over is from leaning too far right?
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 30 Jul '07 - 22:02
More of a reason to change the law to make those assholes NOT lifetime tenured.
When you have a problem (health or otherwise) you deprive the country of the fair and balanced decisions....oh Gawd, I can't do it with a straight face...
by: Father Tyme (contact) - 30 Jul '07 - 22:05
my son has epilepsy, yet can not afford the medicines required, which his mother and I provide for him. When will these conservatives realize that many peoples lives hang in the balance without some kind of health care. I would not wish Mr.Roberts the fate that might ensue if he was poor, out of work, and had no access to medication. I only wish he realizes that sort of thing when he decides on many other Americans futures when he votes.
by: Sawtoothwilly (contact) - 30 Jul '07 - 22:12
Sawtoothwilly,
What you state is one of the imponderables of our lives. The only way someone like Roberts or one in that position could EVER appreciate your situation is if it happened to them.
A friend of mine , a long time ago, suggested that we take all of Congress and wall them into a 2 square mile electrified fenced-in area guarded by armed militia. The compound would be in the hills of West Virginia during December through March. Give them basic food stamps and minimum wage to live on with their families.
And if they make if through the winter, POSSIBLY they'd have epiphany.
I've always been skeptical, but gawd, I'd love to see it.
by: Father Tyme (contact) - 30 Jul '07 - 22:33
Sawtoothwilly, can you imagine what it would do for people who can't afford medication and medical care if some of that 10-12 billion a month for Iraq were spent on such things?

I've read elsewhere, (but don't know much about it), that sometimes you can contact the drug manufacturer and get assistance on needed medications. My best wishes to you, and your son.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 30 Jul '07 - 22:36
Other "breaking" news: Sen. Stevens’ home raided by FBI

Federal investigators and a grand jury looking into public corruption in Alaska have been asking questions about a 2000 remodeling project at Stevens’ home, particularly the involvement of the oil field services firm Veco.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 30 Jul '07 - 22:58
I tried to feel sorry for him, and couldn't. I feel sorry for his family but the good of the country is at stake and I just don't care. But then he's made it painfully obvious he doesn't give a flying fig about me or any other person who isn't part of the powers that be. God willing, this could be the opportunity to fix a terrible wrong.

Oh yeah, the seizure thing gave me pause during the confirmation hearings, because using stress as an excuse didn't really make a good case for being able to handle the rigors of the job.
by: Debra (contact) - 31 Jul '07 - 00:48
I'm curious as to who would be tapped to take his place.
And don't go for telling me that y'all weren't wondering the same thing, now... wink
by: tali (contact) - 31 Jul '07 - 02:57
tali,
I imagine there's going to be someone available from a different department. Al...albert..something like that. I'm sure he'd do a heck of a job.

Excuse me while I go cut my wrists.
by: Father Tyme (contact) - 31 Jul '07 - 09:09
Sawtoothwilly, What medications is your son taking that are so expensive? I'm just curious. You do not have to answer.

Foiled Goil, do you have any source for the Iraq war costing $10-12 billion a day? That's around $4 trillion a year... or 1/3 of the entire US GDP.

As for Chief Justice Roberts... Maybe he would be better off if his doctors put their souls into their work a little bit more. wink

Debra, God willing, this could be the opportunity to fix a terrible wrong. Are you saying that you wish him dead? This from a healer who puts her soul into her work and only wishes good to all people in return. eek

Go here for the correct info. Okay?

For a couple overview lists of numbers:

go here,

and here.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 14:41
Foiled Goil,

Which of those links shows where you got the figure of "10-12 billion a day"?

I could not see any such values.

Thanks
by: Newbie (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 15:00
I see a set you up. I'll fix the link, if that's what you want.

Obviously, 10-12 billion is the per month total.

That's about $200 million per day, or $140,000 per minute.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 15:33
Of course you did, just to test me. Good excuse. Expecially when you gave me the links and tried to pass them off as true, too.

I had not actually read this thread until just then. The true time until noticing, once reading it, was about 1 second. It was such a totally overblown number, there in no way it could remotely be true. What about the other times?
by: Newbie (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 15:56
Whatever. You can believe what you want, you will anyway. I don't really care. I've previously and frequently cited that data as the per month total. You just thought maybe you had scored one, that's all.

Most anybody would've already known it was a monthly total. The proof was in the links, I didn't "pass them off as true," they are true. They validated the correct numbers.

What about what other times??
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 16:19
So, what you are saying is that you will say anything that you like as long as most people will probably know that what you are saying is incorrect. Then you try to pass off the error by giving a link that just validate the fact that you were wrong. Then you say, oh it was just test to see if you were watching.

I didn't "pass them off as true," they are true.

Um, "10-12 billion a day" is NOT true. Just like you said above.

Why not just say, " Oops, I was wrong. Here is the correction." I know that I have done just that in the past. I know it is hard to admit an error.
by: Newbie (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 16:30
I'm not saying anything of the sort. Like I said, think what you want.

I gave the links as proof of the correct figures. The links are the true figures.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 16:38
correction... Yes, the links were not passed off as true. Just the 10-12 billion per day was passed off as true when it clearly was not true.
by: Newbie (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 16:39
Better now? I adjusted my link. Have I satisfied your link requirements?

Oops, I mean, have I satisfied your link demands?
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 16:49
I have no "link demands". I do, however, not accurate statement of facts demands. I called you on your lie, error, mis-statement of the facts. Call it what you will. I just like true and accurate figures to be used when trying to prove a point, not just a wrong number that most people should probably know is wrong and will fill in the black with the correct number. But as long as your point is made who really cares about the actual facts, right?
by: Newbie (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 17:27
correction... If I could edit the above statement, I would.

"correction... If I could edit the above statement, I would."

Okay, fine, Newbie. I corrected it. I'm sure that won't please you either, because you are impossible to please. I provided ( "passed off" ) the proper links to reflect the correct info. Any other demands?
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 17:57
No more demands, just the facts. Thank you.
by: Newbie (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 18:37
You could give just facts, too, and not spin, twist or lie.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 18:54
I have not tried to pass false numbers as fact.
by: Newbie (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 21:36
train2 Neither did anyone else. Accept it or not. I don't care. You're predictable, tedious and beyond boring. This just proves it, yet again. It got fixed because you got all persnickety (as usual) and demanded it. You won't (as usual) let go of that stuck needle. I gave you links to the correct information. The numbers, themselves, are not wrong. I'm repeating again what I've already said:

10-12 billion is the per month total. That's about $200 million per day, or $140,000 per minute.

You could give just facts, too, and not spin, twist or lie. You shouldn't use double standards. If you want to demand certain standards, you should also abide by them. Otherwise, you're just being hypocritical. I think it's past time for you to just drop it.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 22:22
Ok, I admit it. I got set up by you posting acknowledge lies as facts in a open forum for all to read and believe as fact. Wow, that really is impressive. Does that mean that every time I catch someone here with false data passed as fact, I am being set up again?

LOL, It got fixes because you posted a lie and got caught.

I hate it when people get all "persnickety" and don't wans lies posted as fact. confused

You gave me links to correct information that only proved my point. Well done.

I do not expect double standards. Whenever I post data as fact, I will be able to back it up with a reference or link. (One that actually corroborates what I said.)

I will drop this one. Since you have accepted that it was flat out wrong and corrected it. I will be watching in the future for more so-called tests.
by: Newbie (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 22:53
Newbie, just stop it. You're spinning and twisting again. I did not lie, I deliberately baited you. Just like you bait everybody else. I waited for you to ask for links, so I could show you how unconservative your party actually has been. At least you went and read the links.

Now, it's over.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 22:59
I said that I will drop it, however you respond with an attack. You accuse me of spinning. I defend myself.

I did not lie, I deliberately baited you.

If everyone else who sees this blog was in on it, then yes I was set up. If even one person who reads this thread did not know about it, then yes indeed you did post a deliberate lie. No spin. From Wester's online, to lie is 1 : to make an untrue statement with intent to deceive 2 : to create a false or misleading impression. You have admitted to doing just that.

As for your links... Yes indeed I read them. I never said that I wouldn't. I was interested where you got such a screwed up number to pass off as fact. Thanks for the test. I seem to have passed you little test just fine, thank you. sup cool
by: Newbie (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 23:20
That's from http://www.m-w.com
by: Newbie (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 23:20
No, you don't get to qualify "if everyone who sees blog this was in on it," or "if even one person who reads this thread did not know about it." You ARE spinning and twisting, again. I did not respond with an attack. You do bait people. You just did it, again. You play by double standards. The numbers figure itself was not a screwed up one. 10-12 billion is the per month total. And I'm repeating myself, again. For someone who said that they were dropping it, you sure don't seem to know how.

You'll keep on keeping on, Newbie. I know you will, because you don't know how to let go. You keep wanting to turn it into more that what it is.

Enough, Newbie. For God's sake, just drop it. Prove that you can do it.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 01 Aug '07 - 23:53
I think I do get to qualify it. First of all, I already did. Second of all, how else can I differentiate between a deliberate lie and set-up by you and just a regular error?

. The numbers figure itself was not a screwed up one.

This is true. It was the WORDS part just after the numbers that made it totally incorrect.
by: Newbie (contact) - 02 Aug '07 - 14:10
"...predictable, tedious and beyond boring ... spinning and twisting ... double standards ... baiting ... stuck needle ... don't know how to let go"
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 02 Aug '07 - 18:30
"...unwilling to admit posting an incorrect fact... ...or flat out lying"

All this just because someone would not correct one acknowledged factual error.
by: Newbie (contact) - 03 Aug '07 - 12:51
I corrected it.

For someone who said that they were dropping it, you sure don't seem to know how.

You'll keep on keeping on, Newbie. I know you will, because you don't know how to let go. You keep wanting to turn it into more that what it is.

"predictable ... baiting ... stuck needle ... don't know how to let go"
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 03 Aug '07 - 14:55
I was certainly willing to drop it when your error was resolved. You then came right back after that by accusing me of "spinning and twisting", when in reality, the only thing wrong was you posting as fact of wrong data. You started it right back up. ead
by: Newbie (contact) - 03 Aug '07 - 17:21
You don't spin and twist?
"Debra, God willing, this could be the opportunity to fix a terrible wrong. Are you saying that you wish him dead?"
~ Newbie 01 Aug '07 @ 12:04
Whoa.
___

I corrected it.

For someone who said that they were dropping it, you sure don't seem to know how.

You'll keep on keeping on, Newbie. I know you will, because you don't know how to let go. You keep wanting to turn it into more that what it is.

"predictable ... baiting ... stuck needle ... don't know how to let go"

Let it go, Newbie.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 03 Aug '07 - 19:34
My question to Debra was not spin. It was a direct question about her comment. It actually allowed her to spin as she saw fit.
by: Newbie (contact) - 03 Aug '07 - 22:14
You indeed were baiting, spinning and twisting. You were, once again, trying to put in something that wasn't there.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 03 Aug '07 - 22:31
I was asking Debra what was there. There is a difference.
by: Newbie (contact) - 03 Aug '07 - 22:48
Nope.

You were trying to imply something that wasn't there. You were spinning and twisting. The very fact that you went so far as to say:
"It actually allowed her to spin as she saw fit."
...is proof enough of your baiting. And that's also proof that you had already prejudged any answer.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 03 Aug '07 - 23:48
Nope. I was asking Debra what she meant.
by: Newbie (contact) - 04 Aug '07 - 00:34
Nope.

If you were asking Debra what she meant, you would've asked her what she meant.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 04 Aug '07 - 00:38
Nope. I was just asking Debra what she meant. Just accept it and move on. It wasn't ever written to you.
by: Newbie (contact) - 04 Aug '07 - 07:54
Pfft. Debra's comment wasn't specifically written to you, either.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 04 Aug '07 - 11:15
Pfft. I didn't say that Debra wrote to me. It was a general comment to which I asked her to clarify.
by: Newbie (contact) - 04 Aug '07 - 21:17
No, you didn't ask for clarification, either. You did not ask what she meant. You asked something totally different. You're still spinning and twisting.
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 04 Aug '07 - 21:26
Yes, I asked her the meaning of her statement. You are the only one having trouble with this. ead
by: Newbie (contact) - 04 Aug '07 - 22:27
No. Your question was:
"Are you saying that you wish him dead?"
~ Newbie 01 Aug '07 @ 12:04
You did NOT ask what she meant. You did NOT ask for clarification. You said something entirely different with the question that you asked.
