Open Forum of March 14, 2007

by: Dark Wraith

This is an open thread for readers here at Big Brass Blog and readers over at my flagship, The Dark Wraith Forums, who have been offered the link to this post for use during a rather testy period in which I am moving The Dark Wraith Forums from the Blogger publishing platform to the completely self-contained Nucleus content management system, which is what I use here.

As soon as possible, The Dark Wraith Forums will be departing from the poundingly incompetent hands of the folks at Blogger, which is a "service" (and I use that term quite loosely) of Google. In the wake of that glad parting of ways, I shall look back long enough to post an article in which I flame Google to such an extent that readers might want to shut off their smoke detectors while the page loads.

Alternately, I might just let the matter drop and move on. Perhaps I should put up a poll to see if readers want to see me rip Google's virtual hide from its cyberspace backside.

For now, though, I must find inner peace as I go through the process once again of building a Website that is visually attractive, content rich, and functionally (at least somewhat) usable. Failing that, I'll do the best I can, given my own hack-oriented incompetence as a Website builder.

As all of this is occurring in the background, an open thread is in order.

Speak your peace, here. No topic is off-topic. Once the sun goes down, I'll turn on the dance floor lights and show people where to kick the jukebox to make it play for free.

I should be able to get some fresh potato chips out on the snack table by later this evening, provided blackdog, Mr. Goat, and Peter of Lone Tree haven't broken into my newly securitized food pantry, complete as it is with automatic-response pain ray guns mounted in the ceiling above. I'll also be bringing out my industrial-size espresso and cappuccino maker and see if anyone wants to try my new recipe for the Double-Caffeine Vanilla-Caramel Stroke-Maker Special. I've been wanting to find out what effect that drink has on people. My cat wasn't fond of it: something about how he doesn't like curly whiskers.

The Dark Wraith turns on the lights in the party room.

DW,
Don't forget the trail of breadcrumbs.
The less attention to (Google) incompetence and greed, the better.
I would imagine the only possible items in your pantry would now be mere electron shards! To be found by future cyber-archeologists and their students. (I'm working on cyber picks and shovels to offer for a reasonable price.)
Hopefully the espresso maker wasn't one of the recalled units.
There's nothing quite as sure a change.
I'll stop now. Match game is on the Game Show Network and my brain needs a rest.

Peter was going to hold his Lone Tree to shade Goat and I from the pain rays, but since we read your post we put the operation on hold, and instead will show up at the party and bring some treats. Hope everyone likes bones and alfalfa cubes.

And it's amazing how I don't ever hear a damn thing about google or blogger screwing the pooch. There was some stuff in China a while back, but that never got into the limelight. But then we have freedom of the press over here, all you other less capable types get in line behind.

Amurika is #1. I just know it's so.

For a quick and fun read, I believe it's "Tales from Lake Wobegon" by Garrison Keilor, the chapter called "America still #1" or something like that. Pretty good read poking fun at a bunch of ignorant people that have little concept or care of the greater world. That be most of us, or at least some.

Okay, I'll bring the avocado pie, and I hope you've got some old Willie Nelson songs on that jukebox.

we don't use christian baby blood in our lattes anymore, too many clotting problems. we do however use the collected tears of christiopathic homophobes who get caught on national tv patronizing gay hookers to dip our crudites. the tears of hypocrites are incredibly salty.

Good afternoon, Dark Wraith. You mentioned some incidents with nautical experiences recently so I'll have to own up to this one of my own.

This was about 18 years ago just after I had a nasty (for both of us) divorce. Speak of the blues, I used to sit out in the backyard, the dogs, horses and goats all gone with my neat cat Saki, and with a .22 rifle, thinking about it. I formerly apologize now that my major feeling was how ashamed I was for failure. I was still an adolescent at 32, so my thinking was muddled. I ultimately sought professional help, one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Anyroad some friends of mine, Jimmy & Nancy and Buddy & Karen invited me to a campout on Lake Ouachita a few weeks after the deal. Ouchita is a big corp lake about 30 miles long E-W and almost 10 miles N-S, with an enormous convuleted shoreline, being as it is in the Ouchita Mountains. Now I know, they are really just big hills, but they are the highest point between the Applachians and the Rockies. At 2800' I don't relish a march over these, Mt. Magazine is the big one, but it's NW of the lake. Seems like it's 3800', but I'm not sure.

Lake Ouchita is deep, sometimes more that 300' and this trip took place in the early weeks of March when the Canadian cold fronts still sweep across and really raise the wind from the NW. We arrived at Ctystal Springs Marina and rented a 16' semi-V aluminum boat. Crystal Springs is on the southeast part of the lake, in a protected deep revine. I had thought I had noticed the wind, but at the marina it wasen't obvious. I had brought my 6 hp evinrude (may it last forever, it's better than 30 years old) and we started to load up the boat with our gear, enough for 4 days. Jimmy had a styrofoam icechest as big as a coffin and with all the food and drink (lots of beer) it must have weighed better than 100 lbs. I asked the dock operator about the wind, and he said, looking around,"it don't seem too bad".

Nancy, Karen, Jimmy, Buddy and I along with two fairly large chow dogs got into the boat, there was barely room to sit. Fired up the outboard and noticed real fast that it would not rev halfway to its full speed, and the idea that we were hopelessly overloaded occured to me, but one of the more normal human conditions is to be an idiot, so I let the thought pass. Jimmy rolled up a Columbian red and we partook, heading north toward the main body of the lake. That was some good shit.

After we all (not the dogs) were redeyed we rounded a point into the main body of the lake. Damn sam. The wind was howling with 6-7' whitecaps. There was no way I could turn the boat around to go back without being imediately swamped. The only thing I could do was to point into the wind and get everyone bailing as we were taking on water from the waves. The dogs were noticeable scared, and so was I. The island we were heading for was a few miles off, but there was one close to my course, so I steered a little starboard (Ar!) and allowed a combination of motor and wind to vector me toward it, it was at least a quarter mile away.

As we approached the island, and never forget we were all damn terrified by this time, my worst fear was hitting a rock as we attempted to land. As I pulled up to the lee side of the island, amazingly the constructive interference of the waves were now coming from behind, again threatening to swamp the boat. At the last second I jammed the throttle for all it was worth (not too much) and rammed the bow onto the bank.

We all got the hell out of that boat and with wobbly legs thanked whatever forces we knew for still being alive.

Women are so damn powerful, it was only minutes after we had landed and the girls were fixing something to eat, and we were all hungry. We unloaded the boat, and with just me in it I went back out and had a blast. With just me I could get it on a plane and it floated like a cork, the 6-7' waves were not a problem less loaded.

Later in the afternoon with about 4-5 trips in a more lightly loaded rig, we made the final trip to the island we were headed for.

Moral. It's OK to be stoopid, just try not to kill anybody, and NEVER, EVER overload a boat.

Blackdog, you deserve a whole avocado pie just for your-own-self! ing6
by: Missouri Mule (contact) - 14 Mar '07 - 18:25
And don't ask about life jackets. We did have some flotation cushions, but we were in deep do-do for awhile. When I die it will not be in a small boat.

Good ev'ning, again, Wraith.

IMO? FWIW, for those who are way less technologically savvy than yourself, I think it would be a diss-service to the ones who still are using that abomination called Blogger. It's easy enough for some. Hell, there are those that can't even grasp that. Ya know? And, yes, it is frustrating as hell sometimes. Not everyone can build their own site from scratch. You must do what is best for you.

I just know your results will be great, Wraith. B-3 is living proof.
Once the sun goes down, I'll turn on the dance floor lights...
biggrin Did you buff the dance floor? razz
by: Foiled Goil (contact) - 14 Mar '07 - 23:05
Good evening, Foiled Goil.

This time, I waxed the floor.

As I recall, too many folks got fussy when they heard my skin do that SQEEEEK thing during the nude breakdancing number.

The Dark Wraith suffered floor burns that just didn't quit.
by: Dark Wraith (contact) - 15 Mar '07 - 00:39
Gliding is so much nicer than suffering from floor burns (oy!). wink

Yes, Blogger kept saying eventually all blogs would go to the new blogger abomination system. (Not impressed.) Nice of them to force the issue the way they did, huh? Would that "no robot" thing (not that I'm even sure of what that is) help on the snooping thing if put into use? And, that would probably prevent Google from citing the blog in searches, I suppose?

I've been reading about Word Press at their help pages. (Word Press seems a little more complicated?) It appears you can migrate present blog content over (?) and that they have (Akismet) spam blockers. I am wondering how touchy/fussy the architecture of their template is for those who are blog impaired, although I understand one can't really change the html itself there. I'd be interested in your thoughts on that system. (Or easier ones, if you have alternate suggestions?)

(I don't really want to know techy stuff, dang it. I just want things to work, not necessarily to know how they work.)

Okay, TWO avocado pies, but I have to stand back and let the rest of youse do the blogger thing. However, dancin' is my favorite sport and I was known as The Disco Queen waaaaaay back when - sooooooo far back. Archie Bell/Drells is cool too - I'll listen to almost anything from the late '50s on.
by: Dogmom (contact) - 15 Mar '07 - 13:38
Aging Disco Queen?!?!? (Cue Donna Summer's "Last Dance" )
Here, dogdom.... I'm taking JC's Tiara away from her and giving it to you. cool
....and now added to the Dark Wraith's legacy is bringing disco and nude breakdancing to the blogosphere.
And I think to myself......what a wonderful world!

Oh Dogmom!! Another Disco Queen -- I must confess -- I am too!!

My favorite disco group -- BoneyM -- ever hear them?

Listen to this great tune:
"The Rivers of Babylon":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nm1g8FFRArc

---------------------------------------
Now let's go back to 539 BCE when things were pretty good for a few years:

"In 586 BCE the nation of Judah was conquered by Babylon. About 50 years later, in 539 BCE, the Persians (who had recently conquered Babylon) allowed Jews to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple. By the end of this era, members of the tribes seem to have abandoned their individual identities in favor of a common one."
--------------------------------------------------------

This was an original reggae song, which is actually Psalm 137 which became a hymn.

BoneyM disco's it up nicely -- what a group -- really cool!!!

OK everybody --- DANCE!!!
