Wednesday Wanderings

by: Debra

I quit reading MoDo almost two years ago. I used to really like her, but her schtick never changes. For years she has hated the Clintons, now she has decided to go after Michelle Obama. A woman I do not like, but in no way does she deserve violence. Real or implied. When I clicked on the link, Mincing up Michelle, I was hoping it was going to be about Malkin. Instead it turned out to be a hatchet job on Michelle Obama. Turns out I wasn't the only one disgusted with the title, or the author. Unlike some other brave souls, I wasn't tempted to read it. She used to be funny, now she's just the wicked witch of the east. Where's Dorothy when you need her? Since MoDo can't resist painful strategies.

When I was married we lived in a tiny town called Reutti, which was a little southeast of Neu-Ulm in Germany. It was really cool. Out our living room window we could see a castle in the distance and in the fourteen months we lived there, there was only one light we could ever see, the rest of the castle was always dark. Across a field was a farm with real animals. So cool. The fact that the grocery store was on the other side never bothered me. It had killer cold cuts, wonderful breads and cheeses and lettuce that never got crisp. Even when frozen. And the Gasthaus made some of the best spaetzle and Jagerschnitzel I've ever had. More people should visit the country.

Of course it is. And at the rate the oil companies are making obscene profits and not having to account for their actions, it will cost over $5 a gallon by the end of the summer, if not more. It already costs me $4.52. But I'm getting a bus pass and will use it as often as possible. Or until the VTA runs out of money.

I feel sorry for gay and lesbian people and not because they have a different sexual preference than mine. It's because they are always being used as pawns instead of as people who deserve the same respect as anyone else on the planet. The only time they get decent notice is just before an election and then once the candidates they support have been elected, they're ignored until the next time they're needed.

Do you know your Walkscore? It lets you know about restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. that are within walking distance of your address. Too bad there are only 7-Elevens and Starbuck's (3!) within walking distance. Fresh vegetables and meat are out of the question, they're nine miles away.

You should have ripe stuff real soon, so be patient. Be sure to sit out there and enjoy the view.

I think I've mentioned this before, but an old friend of mine who moved to a neat spot just off the Arkieville River (it's in his backyard) has with his wife planted a pretty large garden, the first time they have ever done this, but then they used to live on a houseboat, and now they have a bit of acreage.

He was talking about how they would be canning and all that so I asked him how many tomato plants they had put out.

65. Holly shit. The thump you heard was my lower jaw hitting the tabletop.

They should have plenty of tomatoes.

I had ten last year and I was giving them away, eating them all the time and they were still rotting on the plant. This year a friend is going to show me how to can them. Hopefully I'll have enough to last most of the winter. biggrin

You will Deb. Look out for blackdogs sneaking about the premise.

The only bad thing about homegrown tomatoes is that they usually all come in within a short time frame. A young woman offered me all the yellow squash I wanted today so I'm making several casseroles for the freezer. I have 8 tomato plants. Two are cherry and they grow against the house near the back porch. You can literally sit in the swing and eat ripe tomatoes. The other six have baseball size tomatoes but still green. I sure would love some fried ones but these first ripe ones are precious to us. It seems as if people are willing to share. A man gave me a real nice cantelope when I took my trash to the center. We may have to grow our own vegetables now that we know the bought ones aren't safe. Let me know Deb when you are inundated with tomatoes. There is a great way to prepare them for use with soups, chili and spaghetti sauce. I have all that canning stuff. I wish you were here and could use mine. Most everything I need is within walking distance. The only chain is a Subway. The rest are owned and run by locals. I took my GR=daughter home today. It cost me $8! for gas. That is where I will splurge this year. Of course I'll try to do as much as possible on that trip so I won't have to make another. Tough time for a young woman, 14, Mom expecting a new baby. Little sister, brat! You remember what it was like at that age.

I never got over being replaced as an only child, I was 3 1/2 and I resented it deeply. The first born son had arrived and I've been an ardent feminist since that moment. If I thought it was awful at 3, I can hardly imagine what it would be like at 14.

I staggered my tomatoes, I learned that painful lesson last year. biggrin The Sweet 100s will come in last and if last year was any indicator, I'll have tomatoes until October. Yum!

Yeah, me and anyone else are raiding your place, sounds too good. Goat? Are you around?

Debra, I'm pea-green with envy! One of the dreams on my Bucket-List is
to cruise the Rhine and and see the castles and ruins about the river's edge. I'd give my left tit to dance through Ludwig's folly and shiver in the gothic halls of Bran Castle.

If I win the power ball (all us rednecks buy tickets) hows about you and I pack up your ma and with eat our way down the Rhine?!? ing7

Y'all just missed the Buford Pusser Memorial Festival! The lawman of the year was announced. Last year the "Rock" showed up. But the Slugburger fest is coming up. Bluegrass Festival is over the 4th of July. Don't know who is coming for that one. The fireworks over the lake are outstanding for a little town. The World's Biggest Fish Fry is in Paris and sometimes Hank Jr is there. Naifeh also sponsors a coon hunt in the fall. We have lots of golf tournaments for charities like St Jude and Lebonheur Children's Hospital. The locals usually run concessions and raise a few funds for the Methodist Church ,DARE,or Race For The Cure. Everybody but you, blackdog, think I'm making this stuff up.

Ms. Mule, that sounds like a great plan, I wish my husband had been so adventurous while we were there.

Tenngran, I believe you, it's only in the city where we don't have fun or socialize with our neighbors on a regular basis. They might rob us or something.
by: Debra (contact) - 12 Jun '08 - 10:42
Tennagran, I KNOW you're not making this stuff up. Here in East Jesus the festivals and celebrations of (pick your own noun) never end. Which I might add, are nothing more than thinly masked events I call Chamber of Commerce coordinated purchasing opportunities.

I'd rather have the late Hussein personally administer the ball shockers to me than attend one of our town's many commercial events.

However, if the event involves coons, riding on a float or the back of a convertible wearing sparkly stuff? Sign me up! wink

MS Mule I hope you haven't forgotten your float smile and your parade hand wave. If you're good enough we might let you ride on the fire engine that is owned by the volunteer fire dept.We promise to place you ahead of the high-stepping horses. I do love the classic cars .
Deb, Never in my lifetime has anyone ever stolen anything from me. We're related to a lot of folks here (please no Dick Cheney jokes) and the rest would absolutely be humiliated if anyone ever thought they had taken something of someone else's. Hell, just ask! I'll loan it to you or even give it to you, just don't steal from me. biggrin

(grumble grumble) confused
Wish MY tomatoes would GROW. It's been so cold and rainy here.
I've got about a dozen plants, Roma and Sweet Millions and they're just SITTING there.
The stems are getting sturdier, but the plants don't seem to be getting much taller, and they sure as hell aren't putting out any blossoms.
Same for the peppers. ead

Last night it was so cold I had to turn the furnace back on...when you wake up under three cats (who usually take turns) it's a hint that the house is too chilly. And they've got fur coats, too...

But according to the Republicans in Congress, the weather patterns aren't changing. I was talking to someone else the other day about global warming and he doesn't believe that it's manmade either.

All my tomatoes are green because it won't warm up enough at night. I had a few edible ones by this time last year. sad

My tomatoes are looking pretty good but I still think I'll go out and give them a pep talk......Well..............
